Rating Review

Customer Rating I found it a very good all round book. Quickly covers the basics (holding fiddle/bow, what notes are where on the music + violin and has a number of simple starter songs) and then for the bulk of the book goes through all the major parts of Irish fiddle, including ornamentation (slurs, cuts, slides) and all different types of songs (jigs, polkas etc), with a good number of songs on each type to learn. It's why I have given it 5 stars, the book teaches you a wide range of techniques to ornament songs yourself / recognise what a song is doing and also gives a good understanding of all the different types of fiddle songs. Also contains interesting bits of information / history about the fiddle / Irish music. Attached CD also good, contains all the songs/examples recorded to a high quality / standard.

Customer Rating What a wonderful book - it starts with the basics and becomes more challenging as it goes along. There's also some very interesting facts about the different types of fiddle music as well as Irish musical instruments and their backgrounds. A lovely book to own.

Customer Rating My pupils are thoroughly enjoying this book because it contains many familiar tunes that are current, as well as some traditional favourites. It moves at a suitable pace for younger or slower pupils, without boring the faster ones.

Customer Rating When I first started to learn the violin, I was taught with the Eta Cohen method - I am now using them to teach students myself. They're great fun and I can thoroughly recommend the series!

Customer Rating I imagine this would be a good book if you have teacher to go through the exercise. For example, it does not illustrate which is string D. I think it would be fair to say that the book assumes prior rudiments of musical knowledge.

Customer Rating I had just been taking violin lessons for a year. When I knew about this book I brought it and found it very interesting, it helped me better than the ones I had been using before. As the author says, it is also useful for adults, like me.

Suzuki Violin School: Violin Part Volume 1                £4.99

The Suzuki philosophy is based upon the idea that children can learn music in the same manner they do their native language, through repetitive listening. This listening is then followed up with 1) Individual Instruction with a trained Suzuki teacher 2) Group lessons on a bi-weekly / weekly basis 3) Parent Involvement 4) Encouragement. Students begin lessons as early as two years old and through repetition of small and enjoyable steps begin building a music vocabulary.

Rating Review

Customer Rating Suitable for beginning adults (me) and children. At the start of the course it forgoes traditional FACE notation and used 01234 fingering so you pick up tunes easily which is great for confidence, it is important to use the CD as you can hear the melody and tone you are aiming for.

Customer Rating The Suzuki method is excellent for starting young children on the violin. The tunes are lovely and build the skill and confidence gradually, and the CD helps them to understand what a beautiful sound is really like. Well recommended - if you can find a good teacher!
